PRESS STATEMENT:
UNAN commiserate with the UN family and mourns with Peru, on the death of JAVIER PEREZ de CUELLAR who was the 5th UN Secretary- General from January 1, 1982 to December 31, 1991.
De Cuellar during his term brokered peace agreements in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Of particular interest to us in UNA-Nigeria is that he played a key role in the area of improving UN Peace keeping operations around the World but worked assiduously for independence of Namibia and adoption of the United Nations Programme of Action for African Economic Recovery (UNPAERD) from 1986-1989.
De Cuellar will be remembered for negotiating a ceasefire between Iran and Iraq in 1988 after about eight years of conflict.
We sincerely hope those he left behind will continue to be inspired by the legacies he left behind. May his soul rest in peace.
