In commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day today July 18, 2024, the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNA-Nigeria) is urging all Nigerians to take action in their communities to combat poverty and inequality.
Nelson Mandela, a global icon of peace, reconciliation, and social justice, devoted his life to fighting for equality and human rights. Nelson Mandela International Day is observed annually on his birthday, July 18th, by the United Nations. This year’s theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”, resonates deeply with Nigeria, where millions still struggle with economic hardship and limited access to opportunities.
Nelson Mandela’s unwavering commitment to justice and equality serves as a powerful inspiration for all Nigerians, he dedicated 67 years of his life to public service. On this day, we honor his legacy by recommitting ourselves to building a more equitable Nigeria. We can all play a role, whether it’s volunteering our time to support local initiatives, advocating for fair policies, or simply extending a helping hand to those in need.
UNA-Nigeria encourages Nigerians to participate in the following ways:
- Volunteer your time or skills: Many organizations work tirelessly to address poverty and inequality. Donate your time or resources to a food bank, mentorship program, or community development project.
- Support local businesses: Empower local entrepreneurs by shopping at small businesses and promoting their products or services.
- Raise awareness: Educate yourself and others about the causes and consequences of poverty and inequality. Share information and resources on social media.
- Advocate for change: Contact your local representatives and urge them to support policies that promote economic fairness and social justice.
- Practice empathy and compassion: Be kind and supportive to those facing
We encourage all Nigerians to join us in honoring Nelson Mandela’s legacy. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of others and build a more just and equitable Nigeria.
