UNA-NIGERIA COMMEMORATES THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS 2024

Every October 1st, the world celebrates the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), an event that raises public awareness of the opportunities and challenges that come with ageing and encourages families, community organizations, and other stakeholders to support older people who are facing these challenges.

This day is observed by a number of national and international organizations that get together to hold seminars, events, national surveys, social campaigns, and other awareness-raising activities, regardless of the welfare and dignity of senior citizens.

Proud to announce its involvement in the International Day of Older Persons this year is the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNA-Nigeria). This year’s event fits with UNA-Nigeria’s goal to increase awareness of the challenges and opportunities of ageing populations in Nigeria and to recognize older persons in our society who continue to offer their knowledge and wisdom within our local communities.

The International Day of Older Persons theme for 2024 is “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.” This is a cry to address the worldwide care worker deficit, emphasize the importance of caregivers’ contributions, and raise awareness of the pressing need to expand training and educational possibilities in older people and it’s study of ageing.

Observing the Day with a number of events, UNA-Nigeria is a prominent supporter of the UN’s principles and objectives in Nigeria. Among these endeavors are:

Palliative care is provided in two (2) communities through Community Outreach Programs. These communities are:

Lagos State: Oko Oba Community
F.C.T. – Abuja: Ijayapi Community, Kubwa

With the help of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), we can recognize the valuable contributions elderly people make to society and emphasize the need to build an inclusive, independent, and dignified environment for them to live in. Together, we can build an older population that lives in a more sustainable, just, and equitable world.

The public is thus invited by UNA-Nigeria to participate in their planned events and projects as well as to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons with them.
